Hello! I have a problem with my Brother LS-1717p sewing machine. The needle keeps becoming unthreaded. The bobbin seems to be correctly threaded and comes out to the fabric. When I push the pedal the 2 strings go into the fabric once and then the machine doesn't stitch. Help! Thanks in advance :o)

The bobbin may be in backwards
the needle is not the correct one for the machine
the needle isn't correctly seated in the needle clamp
the machine is a little bit out of time.
Remember to hang on to the needle thread when you're trying to pick up the bobbin thread
Turn the handwheel in the direction that would advance the fabric from the front to the back of the machine
make sure the bobbin-winding spindle has been pushed back to the left for sewing
make sure your needle is inserted correctly as far as it will go with the flat side facing back
and that the upper tension disks of your machine are threaded correctly.
Make sure the presser foot is up when seating the thread through the upper tension.
Turn the hand wheel (TOWARDS YOU ONLY) never turn the hand wheel away from you and hold the needle thread lightly. .
pull the loop up and then pull both threads (top and bobbin) under the foot and toward the back of the machine.
Also could be a timing problem

the tension at bobbin seems to be the problem, make sure bobbin thread is in placed in bobbin CORRECTLY...then it should not be loose but loose enough to pull out with the slightest pull, top tension should be set on around 4,,,,,

A jammed machine is caused by thread being caught in thehook. Remove the upper thread and the bobbin case, turn the hand wheel towardsyou (counterclockwise) by hand and remove any thread in the bobbin case area. Alwaysturn the hand wheel towards you. Turning the hand wheel away from you(clockwise) can cause the machines timing to become unaligned and jam yourmachine. Also, always make sure the presser foot is in the down position beforeyou start sewing. Sewing with the presser foot in the up position will jam yourmachine in the bobbin case. If youhave an older model sewing machine with a shuttle hook, then you can alsofollow these: 1. Disconnect the sewing machine from any power source.Loosen the thumb screw on the left side of the sewing machine body and removethe cover to expose the needle bar. This is the shaft that extends down andthat you attach a needle to for sewing. Open the shuttle race and remove the bobbinand bobbin case. 2. Turn the hand wheel toward you until the needle hasreached the lowest point of the stroke. The hook should be at the top of itsstroke inside the shuttle race. Loosen the set screw for the needle bar on theupper part of the machine, this is located on the needle bar bushing (thecollar that the needle bar slides through when making a stitch). The needle barshould slide easily up and down. 3. Turning the wheel again, adjust the position of the tipof the needle so that the upper part of the needle eye is just below the bottomedge of the hook inside the shuttle race. Once in position, re-tighten the setscrew on the needle bar bushing. Do not allow the needle bar to slip whiledoing this. 4. Replace the bobbin and bobbin case and close the shuttlerace. Thread and plug in your machine. Using a sizable scrap of cloth, sew aseam to check to see if there are any skips in the stitching. If there arestill skips re-adjust the timing again until you can sew without any skipped stitches. 5. When proper timing has been achieved replaces the coveron the needle bar and tighten the thumb screw. Hope this will help you. Good Luck.

Hi. My guess would be no. Sounds more like an upper or needle thread tension problem than a lower or bobbin thread tension problem. Your trouble could also be the thread take-up lever was missed when threading the machine. Trace the thread path to make sure the threading is correct. Is this an embroidery machine? If not, were you trying make a darning stitch? Perhaps with the foot raised? Keep in mind that raising the foot loosens the upper thread tension.

There could be several things causing this.
First, be sure the bobbin is in the bobbin case correctly. There is usually a line diagram showing the correct placement or you can check the owner's manual.
Second, make sure your needle is inserted correctly. If it is not completely set in the housing, this can prevent the bobbin thread from being caught by the hook. The groove in the needle should be ffacing toward you to assure that the thread interacts with the hook.
Third, be certain the upper threading is correct...passing through all thread guides and correctly through tension and take up lever.
Finally, make sure the bobbin case is free of lint. The machine brush that came with the machine will clean this area well.

First locate the sewing machine tension gauge. Sometimes its called a knob or a button or found on your Touch Screen if you have a computerized machine. Refer to your manual if you can't find it.

Either your needle thread is too tight or your bobbin thread is too loose.

First check that your bobbin thread hasn't slipped out of its tension spring in the bobbin case.

If the bobbin thread is correctly threaded through the tension spring, then decrease your needle tension by 1 number. Test by stitching several inches on your small quilt sandwich. Keep decreasing the tension until no needle thread is visible on the quilt top.

If sewing machine tension problems occur during the middle of a quilting session, again, first refer to the checklist above. Once you're satisfied that your sewing machine is threaded properly and your needle is not the culprit, then adjust the tension as outlined above.

If you have just started testing your quilting thread choices and you are using different threads for the needle and bobbin, you will in all probability make adjustments to your tension.

Make a small quilt sandwich from the materials used in your quilt to make this sandwich. It doesn't have to be pretty or even pin basted. It should be just big enough to test some of the stitching you plan to do on your quilt.

The bobbin goes into the holder in what would appear to be the wrong direction ie, the thread doubles back. If this is correct, the bobbin tension might be too low, there is a screw on the bobbin holder to set the tension.

adjust your tension.You probably did not wind your bobbin properly as well.Make sure you oil your machine every month or so and make sure your bobbin is seated properly before you sew.
Go slower with the pressure foot speed and use the right needle.ALWAYS test on scrap of your sewing material first!!!

I have this machine for like 2 years and can do 2-5oz cowhide and buffalo leather on it (no joke, and it works FLAWLESSLY) inside it has full steel construction,just needs regular oiling compared to pro machines and easily made a few grand $$$ with it while my pro machine is getting repaired (I don't even bother with my pro machine anymore) But you MUST oil it every month and use the RIGHT needle and adjust your tension properly
Also pull out the thread a good 6 inches from the needle and bobbin before dropping the pressure foot and sewing.
Best $70 bucks (WITH TAX) I spent hell,the leather I use costs more than the machine!

Disassemble your bobbin case which is realy quite easy, clean thoroughly with a brush and air, paying particular attention to any rust that may have formed, and any thread that may have weazeled it's way into small but very incremental areas of your case.

Make sure your needle is not in backwards.The rounded side should be on the outside

. If threading is correct and your tension is properly adjusted , then check the hook for scratches. If you have ever hit the hook with a needle, it will be scarred and will catch the thread every time the upper thread passes around the bobbin case. the hook is the sharp point on the shuttle that holds the bobbin case. If it is scratched, polish it smooth with VERY fine sand paper

Make sure that your thread arm that rises and falls, constantly having tension running through it and that it is in fact staying in place.

Alternate between the metal and plastic bobbins - sometimes the plastic bobbins tend to chip

open the bobbin case and see if the hook is turning, if it is it is just a timing problem with the hook and needle, if it isn't tuning you may have a broken gear or timing belt.....It eill need to be looked at or adj by someone who repairs them....Daniel
