If you have a blank screen, just pale blue LCD and no icon or words or anything, chances are that the Firmware is corrupted, and you have to find a clone firmare to reload.
Look for ALI M5661 based MPtools to see if it can detect your mp3. And it is a problem. Very few on the net. This is NOT a Sigmatel.
There is one person, I forgot his URL has details with pictures to show how to bring back the Nextar clone - Ali M5661R based mp3 player.
You have to find a similar unit to use (I have not yet found a thing called PMex) a firware download tool to copy to your pc then use the MPtools or another (I can't remember exactly - isptool what not) to reload the firmware back on to the Nextar. (All the data will be destroyed that is to say the songs).
If you are in Canada, Canadian Tire may still have it that you can buy one. In fact it is on sale this week Oct-04-2008 Saturday on for seven days) for $24.99 before taxes from $39.99.
Beware there is a newer unit called MA588-200S (could be MF588?), and looks different - thinner and looks like a dog biscuit and not a short stubby cigar, buttons and descriptions (seven presets instead of six) are the same but a bigger bubble wrap package. Both bar codes scan as the same unit and price.
The new one may have different processor and radio all that. So I can't say these are exactly the same. I have never tried the MA588.
I have to say that the FM radio is much better than many others and not much noise and sounds better. It does FM direct recording as wav files. And the battery not lithium rechargeble (I use AAA rechargeables) and last very much longer about 8 hours.

the mp3 player isn't being read by the computer, it doesn't recognize it what-so-ever. The player turns on but that's about it.
