Please help me..i have a aspire one d260 netbook..the problem is bootmgr is missing..it has no cd drive and i dont have a external cd drive to use.. how can i fix it using only a usb flash drive..how can i turn my usb flash drive to a bootable device..i convert it to bootable device already but it didnt work..

It looks as though the laptop is not recognising the hard drive, there is no hard drive fitted or there is a hard drive but the OS boot record has been wiped ( I know this sounds obvious but some people buy these 2nd hand only to find the hard drive was removed)

You need to check the hard drive is present by booting to the bios screen it should "see" the hard drive attached. If it is present, then you have a problem with the OS or a damaged hard drive. I think its DEL or F2 or F10 to access the bios, not certain.

At this point, you need to attempt to reinstall the OS, as this does not have an optical drive, you will need to obtain a USB Optical drive, go into the bios and see that it is recognised as a boot device. Do not worry about setting the boot order, the Bios will locate the rom as a boot device.

Attempt a start up repair, ie: wait until the installer looks for a previous installation of windows (if one exists) then allow it to install a repair installation. If it does NOT find this, you will need to doa full install. If at this point you have files you need recovering, a strip down of the netbook and removal of the hard drive will be necessary. You simply then get someone with a computer to jumper your hard drive as a slave and recover the files you need, as a full install requires the hard drive to be fully wiped.

Replace the hard drive after you have done this and proceed with the full reinstall

You can use a USB boot device, but to do this you will need to have access to another computer to make the boot installer:

The Microsoft site has a utility to create a bootable Windows 7 USB device. You will have to find another machine to get the deed done, then boot the machine to change the BIOS to recognize the USB device first in the boot order. You will have access to Windows repair tools after you boot the drive.

Never, Ever, Never, buy a another computer without a cd drive or you'll be faced with your current situation.

I don't know exactly how you are going to get this done because you need a cd drive to do it. If somehow you can get to a dos prompt you might be able to fix it and run the steps below.

You will need a operating system disk or a repair disk to fix it. Insert it in the drive then boot from it. You want to get to a dos command prompt (black screen with white lettering) and type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
bootrec.exe /fixmbr
bootrec.exe /fixboot
bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd

Reboot and see if the problem is solved. If not get back to the dos command prompt and run the check disk utility.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc or a operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot from it. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with white letters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice the percentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run to completion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows. Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair when the options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recovery console and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.
