They do stay on for a while after switch, that is OK. Dim and out of focus may indicate that the output voltage is low. If replacing the battery does not fix it, then the problem may be in the power supply circuit.

The lenses screw out, the electronics are in the body and this involves removing all the screws, including the ones behing the rubber casing. Why do you wish to strip them out?

Check the HV to the tube and see if you can see any discolouration or spots on the tube - they often indicate tube failure.
