To bring back the volume icon in your tray
Go to Control Panel
Open "Sounds and Audio Devices"
under Volume Tab check the "Place volume icon in the taskbar".
This will bring your icon back.
Click 'control panel'
click 'Sounds and Audio Devices'
Check the box that says 'Place volume icon in the task bar'
Try going to Start > Run, and typing:
regsvr32 -u SndVolSSO.dll
regsvr32 SndVolSSO.dll
You did these ?
Start > Run, and typing:
regsvr32 -u SndVolSSO.dll
regsvr32 SndVolSSO.dll
Wait is this XP or Vista?
Try removing the sound device from the device manager, shutdown and reboot
