I wrote to Sunbeam customer service and received this response:
"Breadmaker
model 5890 has a 30-minute delay cycle on the Wheat setting. This
allows for a period at the beginning of the cycle to “soften” the
ingredients for better results. During the first 30 minutes, the
machine does not do anything."
Apparently, this is by design in many machines.

The exact same thing happened to me. The machine was purchased at a yard sale, and was used once without trouble. However, the next time I tried to use it, it simply refused to start. The controls functioned -- all the settings could be entered -- but nothing happened (except a beep) when "Start" was pushed.
