Underscore key Hi, I turned on my computer one day, and it just showed a white underscore and i've tried everything to get it to get it working again but nothing I do seems to work. I tried restarting it, I tried holding f8 when it turns on, I get the start up menu but it makes such loud strange noise whenever I touch a key. Please help ):

Make sure you do not have any external hard drives or flash drives plugged in. Also remove any CD/DVD that may be in the computer. Also locate the panel on the back if this is a laptop and remove and reseat the memory.

SOURCE: computer beeping loudly

It could be that you have a keyboard malfunction, however it looks like there is a bios update that will eliminate the beep at start up. Go to Toshiba's support site and download the bios update. if that doesn't fix the problem then try a new keyboard. Being only 2 months old it should fall under warranty.

SOURCE: My Acer Aspire 5100 wont start up correctly

I had the same problem after running an update to my Norton anti-virus software. When booting the laptop, press F2 to go to the setup menu. One of the options allows you to change the order that is searched when booting up. I moved the boot from hard drive to the last option, allowing it to boot from a network first (which it doesn't find), then from a portable device second (which it doesn't find), and finally from the hard drive. When I boot up, after it doesn't find the first two options, it boots from the hard drive with no problem.

SOURCE: Cannot start Sony VAIO PCG-5J2L /Goes to black screen only

During start-up the computer will go to a black screen for awhile and then the pointer arrow will show alone, and then the system will come up.

If you think it's a hibernation problem, pull the ac plug and battery out for about 1 hour and then plug back in.

If this didn't work, then try the F8 Key and choose "Last Know Good Configuration".

SOURCE: How to enter into BIOS when trackpoint was broken.

Hi there.
Its something to do with the trackpoint, possibly the cable has become loose.
* If an emergency power down is made by switching the system off during or while an application is open, then immediately switching the system on creates a 8611 error.
* Repeatedly turning power off and back on without properly shutting down or allowing the system to shut itself down.

Solution
Wait at least 6 seconds or longer after shutting down the system or before restarting to correct the 8611 error.
See if that gets rid of the error, if not it could be a loose cable to the trackpoint.

Good luck

SOURCE: I turn my computer on,

Well what i can figure out is that your OS is not being loaded, thats the primary issue because of which you are getting a blank black screen and there can be 2-3 reasons why it is not being loaded.
1. Issue with the Hard drive
2. Issue with the RAM disk
3. Issue with BIOS

Here is some troubleshooting you can do :

At the system start up press Pause and check to see if POST has succeeded for all the hardware devices. If it is failing for any device that means that device is not getting powered on so you have to fix that first.

If it succeeds then you need to check our BIOS, at the DELL Stratup screen press F2/F12 (what ever works on your system) to enter BIOS menu. If it is entering that means BIOS is also ok.

So now you need to check your RAM and Hard Disk so for that try booting up from a CD, if it boots from CD and is going to installation screen then it means that your RAM is also perfectly fine and there is something wrong with Hard drive because of which BIOS is not able to locate MBR on the hard disk and so is unable to load OS.

It generally happens if there are some bad sectors on the hard disk so For that you can perform Disk Checking on the hard disk. Disk checking will repair the soft errors on the HD if any but if there are Hard errors which means if some sectors are damaged permanently then you can't anything and have to purchase a new HD.

Hope it helps you.

Plz vote and comment if you like the soluition.

Thanks !!
