"Scan Request Failed"

Suddenly I keep getting an error message when I try to scan a document "scan request failed". I was trying to scan to Acrobat Reader, but none of the settings seem to work.

If I use the on board buttons all I get is the error. If I use the on screen buttons, it scans, but then I can't get the scan to go anywhere.

I tried unplugging it then plugging it back in, rebooting my computer, and I uninstalled and reinstalled the software then rebooted again.

I ended up racing to the UPS store to get some important documents out before they closed, which made me pretty irate at my scanner.

Any ideas???

Thank you :)

Scanner has been working just fine. Now all of the sudden, I start receiving the following message "cannot retrieve application list". What's up? Have uninstalled and reinstalled...same problem. HELP!

  • Anonymous Jul 02, 2008

Sometimes it can't retrieve the application list, other times it says "Scan Request Failed" - I have yet to successfully scan anything! GRRR!

And what's the deal with that "solution" - I don't see how that helps at all!

I had no problems out of this stupid machine until a day or so ago and it keeps popping up cannot retrieve application list. I can get it to scan through wizard, but I have to reopen it every time I want to scan another picture. What is the deal with this. Any help or has Lexmark just went to S**T?

  • spackle Sep 04, 2008

Just took me 40 minutes to download the device driver for my Lexmark X3550. Still didn't help with my error message in scan mode, "Cannot retrieve Application List". What gives?

  • Anonymous Jan 21, 2009

I talked with Lexmark 7 times over the same issue. I got so mad and so irrate with one of the reps they sent me a new one. Guess what, the new one does not scan either. THiS is definitely the last Lexmark I will ever use. Good service for sending me the printer, but bad product(s). Can anybody post an answer or is this just a Lexmark griping chat room? I just say buy a scanner separetly or a whole new printer if space is not available.

Problem: Lexmark cannot retrieve applications list

I have the Lexmark X3550 with the WiFi option board installed (makes it same as the model X4550) and get the “cannot retrieve applications list” message on one of the five computers connected to my router (Linksys WRT54G V8) and using wireless printing and scanning. Just like everyone else with a similar Lexmark WiFi printer/scanner, I can print wireless, but cannot get the wireless scanner to work on one of my PCs.

The fix, in my case, was to change the Lexmark network name in their Imaging Studio application. This worked for several weeks, but now I get the “cannot retrieve applications list” message again. I have not fixed the new error yet, but changing the network name may work for you. Here are the steps to change the Imaging Studio network name.

1. Launch Lexmark Imaging Studio. (Double left-click on its icon)
2. Left-Click on “View or change network settings”.
3. Enter a new network name in the first box shown. (This box contained the correct network name for my PC, but another name was needed to make the scanner work. I simply added “-lex” at the end of the current network name.)
4. Left-Click OK. You should return to the Imaging Studio screen.
5. Close the Lexmark Imaging Studio window. (The tray icon should remain at the screen lower right.)
6. On the printer, press the Scan Mode button.
7. On the printer’s display screen, select the Computer Name that you entered for the new network name. Just use the arrow buttons until the exact name is shown.
8. Press the Check button. The display screen should show “Downloading Applications List”. Within about 10 seconds the message should change to “ *Scan to Computer ”. Wireless scanning should now work.
9.. Press the Start Color or Start Black button. “Requesting Scan” will be shown. After a few seconds scanning will start. The process is a bit slow.
10. After a while you may see an empty small Lexmark window onscreen. Later, the Lexmark Imaging Studio will appear onscreen, then change to show many options and features. An image of the scanned item will appear in a Lexmark window. Save and/or edit the image. Another scan can be done by pressing the printer’s Check button again. Be sure the correct computer name is shown on the printer’s display.

That’s it. A new computer name was the solution. Your PC and printer may require a restart (power off) after changing the “computer name”.

Hi Guys, I had the same problem. This problem is related to name resolution on your network, maybe due to old cache on arp table( every time you turn the power off you are not using the ip address that the server gave to your printer so there is a time to expire, when expired your printer or your computer get a new ip address and then the name linked to that old ip address cause the problem). To solve this issue just click at windows start

  • type cmd on run and enter
  • type ipconfig and enter
  • take note of your ip address
  • Launch image studio
  • click on network settings
  • replace the name for the ip address
Remember, when you leave you computer off for long time or the pinter is not working, check you ip address again.

The solution is to go to the Lexmark site under support (not drivers & downloads) look up the printer. There are two patches that fixed this problem on my laptop.

Good luck!

When going into scan mode, it states that "cannot retrieve application list."
Josias Figueira's solution (listed as #4 above today) works, Basically rename your computer. I think of it as a temporary fix as it needs to be done if one does not scan often.

gramirez' solution (#3) is a permanent fix. "The solution is to go to the Lexmark site under support (not drivers & downloads) look up the printer. There are two patches that fixed this problem on my laptop."

The downloads are:
(1) http://swdownloads.lexmark.com/Patches/3500-4500/3500-4500.exe
Download, install, re-boot the PC; Unplug the power adapter from the back of the printer (30 seconds), on the printer/scanner.
then (if needed - I used it)
(2) http://swdownloads.lexmark.com/Patches/3500-4500/3500-4500wifiethernetpatch.exe
Download, install, re-boot the PC, Unplug the power adapter from the back of the printer (30 seconds),

I hopes this helps someone.

I had the same problem with my lexmark x4550 all in one printer. It would print and copy using wireless connection but for some reason it stopped scanning.I checked my wireless connection to the router and the results showed that it was connected and had a strong signal but it could not retrieve the application list when attempting to scan - my router is a linksys WRT54GS and my computer is running windows 7 OS. After trying all of the solutions on this page I experimented and found that the following steps resolved the problem: With the printer and internet switched on press the settings button on the printer and accept by pressing the centre button (this has a tick on it). Using the direction keys scroll through the settings until you reach network settings and accept. Once again scroll through the settings until you reach wireless setup and accept. When you now scroll through these settings you have a choice of 1) Network name 2) wireless signal quality. or 3) reset network adapter to factory settings. Go for option 3 (reset to factory settings) which will clear the printer memory and you can then set the printer up from scratch. In my case I ran the wireless setup from the linksys program on my C drive and started to install the printer to the wireless network as a NEW printer. A short way into the installation sequence a screen came up from the Linksys website advising me to download the driver for windows 7 - although I had already carried out this update in the past I repeated the operation. On completion of the remainder of the installation sequence I found that I was able to use my scanner without any problems. pete

I have talked this over with Lexmark... They seem to have no solution. So now I am stuck with a scanner that can copy... but can't scan. When I scan from my computer I get a message that it doesn't work (it's still scanning at that time). When I scan from the scanner it scans (only the first time I start the printer up really) and then after a while it says that 'there is no computer connected'.
It's too sad for words. Most probably it's some kind of windows update that doesn't correspond with the latest driver update or something. We can only hope they are working on it.
