- While arch bridges are aesthetically pleasing and distribute weight well, they require very sturdy, unyielding foundations (abutments) to prevent the arch from spreading under load. They can also be more complex and costly to construct compared to simpler beam bridges, and they are generally limited by the span distance they can cover without additional support structures.
