My Nikon D40 will not auto focus with the quantaray lens...when I bought the lens...they assured me it would be compatible with the d-40...where did I go wrong? Purchased a 420-800mm lense and T adapter for Nikon D40X camera. The lense is for manual use only and does not have a drive motor. On fitting T adapter to lense and then onto camera body, the indictor monitor showed LENSE NOT ATTACHED although i can focus lense, it would not take a picture. It was a nightmare trying to remove T adapter from body
The D40 will only autofocus with the Nikkor AF-S lens...look for the AF-S in the lens title. For 3rd party lens, only SIGMA with the USM title will autofocus.
To use the T-adaptor...you will need to use the "Manual" mode of the camera.
"compatability" does not necessarily mean the lens will utilize all the camera's functions. You will probably see few or none of the contacts on the Quantaray lens body (where it connects) that are present on the camera body interface. As noted, it will only be usable in manual mode. No autofocus and no light metering.
Perhaps you should try to return it in exchange for a lens that is "fully" compatable. A 17-55/f2.8 lens would be a great all-round lens and if it were compatable with the teleconverter then you would fill the hole before that big lens. Sigmas are better than most non-Nikon lenses.
Also note that this compatability issue applies to the "T" adapter as well. I'm sure you mean teleconverter. Many may not have a clue what you are talking about. Most say TC, if they abbreviate it. You need the proper Nikon teleconverter to have any ability for lenses to communicate with the camera body.... There are non-Nikon teleconverters out there that will work, but most Nikon users don't like them and the glass quality is critical to getting good pictures, since it is a multiplier. There are several different TC versions, depending on the lens you plan on attaching, so be sure to get the correct one.
BTW, I have the 70-200 Nikon zoom and matching teleconverter and the teleconverter will NOT fit my 24-85 lens! Nikon's site has a guide for this and I believe B&H does, too. Buy from a knowledgable and reputable place, like B&H to avoid these issues in the future.
Also, most recommend you use a 1.4 or 1.7 TC rather than a 2.0. You really need a very good lens to use a 2.0 or the quality of your pictures will suffer greatly.
The Nikon D40 is a beginner camera into digital photography.
It's a cheap and fine camera.
It does not have a lens motor built into the body.
Nikon reduced cost by taking the motor out and just uses lens like Canon EF lens. It's called the AF-S or "Made for Digital"
Some older lens of AF to AF AI mounted to body will not have information (shows errors on LCD displays).
Do not waste you money on those TC, unless you are using F2.8 or faster. Quality will suffers.
The 420-800 is a very slow lens. I believes it's a F6.3 or more. The D40 can't focus in low light like others. Even if you're using Nikons. Just to get a Nikon 400/2.8 will be $8,000.00!
DO NOT BUY any lens that says, "Made for Digital Camera"!
DO BUY lens made for film cameras.

The auto focus will not work with my Nikon D40x. I have a Tamron AF28-80mm. I double checked and the auto focus has been turned on my camera. According to the instructions there is supposed to be a switch on the lens body to switch from manual to auto focus but I haven't found it yet. Any ideas?????
