Print Quality Problem

It's a little hard to describe but we have a FO-4400 which is leaving a pattern of dots down the left 2/3 of the page. The dots are in a streak pattern rather like a bad wiper blade, but we changed the toner and drum and it didn't help.

We thought originally it was an electrical problem like the high voltage supply but once we saw the streaky nature of the defect we are beginning to doubt that that's what the problem is.

Has anyone seen this distinctive type of defect?

This fax machine has a "rocker" type on/off switch, so it can't be held down for 5 sec.

It has been used extensively, probably longer than 2 years.

I scanned a printout of the problem but it was too big to post on this site. If you could let me know your e-mail (mine is charliep@toncha.com) I could e-mail you an image of the issue.

    Thanks for your help.

The marks are definitely appearing before the fuser. In fact, you can see that the drum unit is not being wiped clean after the print cycle. This goes over onto the transfer roller and so there is also toner on the back side of the page.

I opened the shutter on the scanner and tried to clean inside. It didn't have any effect.

By the developer drum do you mean the photo-conductor drum? Where is the defuser? Is it in the drum cartridge?

  • charliep999 Jan 15, 2008

I think it uploaded and this is the link

I'll have a tech check the voltages in the morning.

I'll have to fix the jpg at home and upload it tomorrow.

    Thanks.

  • charliep999 Jan 15, 2008

Yes we've cleaned it with a vacuum.

I can e-mail a scanned copy of the print defect. My e-mail is charliep@toncha.com.

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks for all your advice. I threw in the towel about lunch and took the fax to a Sharp dealer. Their Field Service manager took one look at the printout and said to change the drum unit. I explained that this was a new drum unit. He said to get another new one anyhow. So we got a new drum cartridge and It fixed the problem immediately.

Did you bother to check the voltage on the image controll circuits??? i saw this problem already and it wasnt from the external power source, but from faulty components on the inside.. Have a technician chech the main power board , and if thats good, the circuit board that controlls the laser, image transferdrum and the toner displacemanet (called the image transfer circuit) I'b edt you'd find your problem there.. If he finds its the Controll Ic, id recommend that you get a replacement cause chances are you wont find the ic..

Another possible cayse is the Controll circuit it self which controlls how the image is to be printed is proberalluy damaged,, If this is the case you will need to replace the entire board or purchase a new one.. You will know this is the case if all else fails ...

BTW photo-conductor drum = image transfer drum

  • Anonymous Jan 15, 2008

Thats a toner displacement problem ,, but you changed the toner and drum as well as cleaned it,, Its deffenately a problem with the board inside the machine.. You can check the voltages but i doubth that will help as i have seen the image i strongly believe its the main controller ic.. you can change the entire board,, but you might as well buy a new one.. listen to your tech tomorrow and see what he says..

Could you please upload a copy of the printout to http://www.imageshack.us/ and post a link here?

  • Anonymous Jan 15, 2008

It's impossible to see images when they're uploaded here as the resolution they're shown in is too small.

Regarding the actual problem, have you tried cleaning the print compartment?

It sounds like you have a developer drum problem. If you replaced it then you need to clean the defuser. It's as long as the developer drum. If that doesn't solve the problem then you probably have a problem with with the dc voltage coming from your processor. You would need someone who services the unit to check for correct voltage and whether it would need replacing or not.

Yes the developer can be called a cartridge, drum, etc. It looks like you solved the problem. At times you can get a defective cartridge I have several times before and it will drive you nuts. Glad you got things fixed.

Hi you usually get this problem if you are not using original cartridges if you are using originals then its probably software problem with the printer and this will mean taking to repair as they have software to reset printer and to test it are you 100% sure the print heads are clean as this can casue problems but this dont sound like the problem your having it sounds more like software problem.
Also this usually happens if the printer has been used often over couple of years if this is the case then their is nothing you can do but to replace the printer have you tried resetting the printer.
try holding down the on off button for about 5 sec this should reset the printer give this a try then try printing let me know how you get on ok

I would try stopping the print process in between the drum and the fuser. This will tell you if it is a laser / drum problem.

If the paper doesn't have the marks on it, look for a scratched / damaged fuser roller.

If it does still have the marks, most laser faxes have a thin strip of glass in between the laser unit and the drum. Some even have a small mirror. May just be a dirty glass / mirror.

Take out the new drum unit, and look for this glass. A flashlight will be helpful.

I forgot to ask, is this when you are printing a fax, or copying something?
