Try installing updated APCI (advanced power and cooling interface) drivers, which come from the maker of the motherboard and are generally on that maker's site, indexed by board part number.
You also have to have APCI enabled in the BIOS, or sometimes with jumpers. Some motherboards were made broken as far as hibernation features and won't be curable, but many are curable, as long as the OS (e.g. WinXP, Ubuntu Linux, MacOS X) is also willing.
