Check whether the CPU fan or SYSTEM fan is working properly or not. If those are ok, go to BIOS and check see CPU fan speed & temperature.
eg: Your CPU should idle @ around 25°C if your room is 20°C or something like this.
If your computer keeps on shutting down after only a few minutes turned on .. chances are you are right. check the following:
check the fan of the power supply if it is spinning and check the air vent if it is clear of any obstruction like accumulated dust. if dust is heavy try using compressed air to free or rid of dust.
check also the heatsink of your processor and check if there is an accumulated amount of dust blocking the fan air from reaching the heatsink to cool your processor. use compress air again. check also if fan spin is giving enough air power to cool the processor.
You can be sure your computer is overheating if your cursour is lagging or if u see a shadow around it. if so try installing another pc fan with can be found at wal mart or any eletronics store.

I have an HP desktop and I have been keeping it on 24 hours a day to record programs (I have Window Media Center with tv tuner). Now my computer shuts off during the day and it also shuts off when I use too much ram ie. using too many programs at one time. I know i have a problem with the fan because every time i try to turn it back on it says "System fan has failed. Service PC" How could I fix this?
