Your burner is clogged remove and clean this will allow the gas to flow out the burner not back feed down the burner tube

SOURCE: flame from behind knob

no these are a one time fail valve because the reason there is a flame is the packing has came out of the valve. Most of these valves may be purchased from either westlake hardware, home depot, or wal-mart.

SOURCE: removed burners for cleaning, flame erratic

I don't think you "seated" the burners correctly where they go into the knobs. Get up under the knobs, look up and you'll see what I mean.

SOURCE: the gas flamed up on the underneath the knob

It's either blockage or a leak at the valve.. Turn gas ogg and trighten valve, the open gas very slowly. before lighting check connection with soapy water.

SOURCE: why do flames shoot out behind the control knob on

More than likely, the venturi valve is clogged by a spider or spider web. You will need to remove the burner to check for this and clear them out. The venturi is the part of the burner that fits over the burner orifice. It may be 2 slots cut into both sides of the burner tube or a series small holes that are not burner port holes.

Hope this helps you and thanks for choosing FixYa. Cheers...
