I checked on these sites. Thanks for the further information. They don't seem to relate to my Apple G4 PowerBook, but at least they've given me some idea about inverters.

I really appreciate all the comments from people on this site. Sorry to be slow in resonding, but time in Australia is opposite from US. Anyway, I have much more knowledge than I had when I posted the problem. I'm going to have a friend's friend who has an Apple service look it over and give me an estimate on fixing the screen. He's also got some possible replacement panels if it needs one.
