You should be able to pull them off the spindle without any problem.
If they prove difficult to remove, then prize them off with a thin bladed screwdriver or similar,
or grip them with a pair of pliers with a piece of cloth between the jaws of the pliers to protect the knobs and pull them off that way.
The provided answer is about the simple type control knobs. The ones on the AEG5212 are of the 'press to set' type. They pop out and when set to correct temperature you press them back in. Found that the 'pop out' part can be pulled off and this gives access to the screws securing the switches that lay behind the front control. Thanks for your answer though. Kind regards.
