you should be able to upgrade the ram to 2G but it must be compatible. I usually choose Kingston Value Ram or Crucial ram after checking their compatibility list.

I need to know how much ram my motherboard will be able to run without burning up? I have an Emachines t1090 w/ Windows XP, 900MHz Intel Celeron Processor, 128MB SDRAM, CD-ROM 48x Max. CD-Drive, 20GB Hard...

The max for your system is 512MB. You have two memory slots and one has a 128MB chip so if you want 512MB, you need two 256MB chips and throw away the 128MB.
At Newegg, a 256MB chip is $42+ shipping of $1. I'd consider getting a new computer instead.
I don't think memory upgrade will tax your system cooling.

Memory upgrade problems

Same here, except that I haven't even been able to get 512MB x 4 to work. Also upgraded BIOS. Did it run OK on 1GB x 2? (Mine does.)

Well, you will find that the memory may not be usable in an new motherboard, especially it it is slower type. Fast ram is a necessity. Also, the graphics card may not be usable if the new motherboard does not support the connector. A good source is www.newegg.com A fast motherboard (Gigabyte GA-MA785GM) )will run about $80, you will need LOTS of ram for video editing, 2x4Gb RAM is $70 for 1066mhz speed, and an AMD triple core CPU, Phenom II 2.8Ghz will run about $120.

What speed memory can be put in dell 5100c

Yes, the 5100C motherboard can support up to 8GB of RAM. It's factory RAM is DDR2 5300, but it can accomodate DDR2-6400 800MHz as well (according to factory specs).

You can find manual on your board at:
http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?modelname=P4T-M&SLanguage=en-us

You probably need to replace your videocard with AGP 4X 1.5V with DVI output.

Good Luck!
