Basicaly depends on the size of the unit but the minimum distance should be atleast 3feet clear from all sides But if your place has one side wind direction out doors then keep the air suction side of the engine towards it so that the cool air goes in easily It helps keeping the engine temprature under limits for long duration runnings On exoust side of the generator should be clear open bcause it takes out the burnt fuel smoke and throws the warm air of the engine and alternator
Make sure you have adequate safe space outdoors to run the generator. In order to provide proper ventilation, some generators require 3-5’ distance on all sides of the generator – check your generator manual for specifics.
