For us to be able to determine the problem can you please try to insert a different CD on the computer and see if you will be able to open it or if the computer will detect it as what it is or will detect it as an audio cd? Please let me know what happen so that we can continue the steps on troubleshooting.

Is this desktop or a laptop? Basically we can determine if the cdrom is bad if we can try to reseat it by unplugging it and the connect it to see if it will have the same problem that even there is no disk it shows audio so that we will be able to determine if this is caused by a software or hardware.

Where I need more information really but hopefully I can help you out a little bit.
First, to get My Computer back on the Start Menu, Right click the taskbar, choose properties. On the Start Menu tab, click customize. On the advanced tab, go to the start menu items section and recheck it.
Now, have you tried that CD on a different computer? Do you get any different results?
Also sometimes I've found a program on your computer is basically locking the CD for it's own use, which is possibly why it's telling you it's an audio CD when it isn't.
Try accessing the CD in Safe Mode. If you have Windows XP or above, reboot your computer. While it's booting, repeatedly tap the F8 key until a menu comes up (if you see the windows logo try again). Choose "Safe Mode". Once you are in safe mode, try accessing your CD again and see what happens.
Let me know if this doesn't help and reply back with more details about your environment.
- Is there any writing on the CD? If so what?
- Is this a CD or DVD?
- What version of windows are you using?

The first method went awry at your "recheck it." I didn't know what to check. My computer refused to open in safe mode. The CD opens normally on my wife's computer. My computer labels this CD drive as audio even when there's nothing it it, so I suppose it's locked some way. My CD is an accounting program.
So, nowhere so far.

Yes, I had already done that. It identifies any CD as audio and identifies the drive as audio even when there's no CD in it.
I seem to be in a loop. I keep getting the same message. I've tried that address, several times, and I get a message telling me it doesn't exist.
It's a desktop -- E-machines T5224 with one CD drive.
