The manual refers to the U61 as being a recovery mode. Have you left it at U61 for a period of time while it tries to recover?
U61 ≥There was a power failure or the AC plug was disconnected while the unit was on. The unit is
carrying out its recovery process. This process restores the unit to normal operation. The unit is not
broken. Wait until the message disappears.
You could always try to force it into standby mode and back out again:
Press [í/I, POWER] on the main unit to switch the unit to standby.
Now press [í/I, POWER] on the main unit again to turn the unit on.
If that doesn't take care of it, everything thing I've found points toward a replacement of components inside the system by a repair service. Hopefully you are still under warranty!

We also had a U61 code on our machine today. We were watching a home-made DVD and then we went to delete part and got the code. We tried to let the machine rest, insert a professional DVD, but nothing worked. Anyone have any thoughts on what the problem might be?
Thanks!
Exactly the same occurance! I tried a few attempts at recovery with customer support technician to no avail. They wanted me to ship it to Indiana so they could reset it but said it would be several weeks before it would be returned. Please, how was your situatin resolved?
U-61 code. Returned unit to Panasonic for repair. Initially they said it was under warranty, then returned unit un repaired and saying out of warranty.
Panasonic lost themselves a customer. Unit was about 10 months old at time of failure....
At least they paid shipping both ways and did not charge for the evaluation, if they did one.
I have the same problem. I was 5 minutes into a recording and U61 came up. Then the unit makes a bunch of noise (sounds like it's resetting) and then reads HELLO. I've tried all of the things mentioned. Since my unit is over a year old Panasonic told me that they would cover the shipping costs, but it would be $130.00 charge, but they would guarentee the price. Any other suggestions out there?
it reads please wait then sounds like it is cycling 4 or 5 times then turns itself off
