If I were to guess from the information you submitted, your Thorens, which needs a specific phono input, is now plugged into a high level input, such as an AUX, DVD, CD etc. These inputs are for a 300 Millivolt input device. Your magnetic cartridge is no where near 300 Millivolts; never measured it, but would have to say a 1/10 of that. If your receiver doesn't not have a label that says "phono", you will need a phono preamp to amplify the output of your Thorens, with the very low input, to an output of 300 Millivolts. These preamps are sold just about everywhere, Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc.
