Type 1
During the code request mode, while holding the DISP key depressed, press and hold the Volume UP or DOWN key for 3 seconds (so that “…” disappears).
Then using your remote enter your code.

Type 2
Press the "Auto" button and "Track up" on face of radio at the same time. The four dash lines ( . . . . ) should "disappear".

Then using your remote enter your code.

Type 3
Model# DPX-4020 and DPX-4030
Press and hold the 1 then the 6 preset key (preset keys are the buttons on face of radio for storing you "favorite" radio stations). "C" should display.
Then using your remote, enter your code.


Enter your number from the remote control unit. Your code number is 5227 (KCAR)

To the right of the six preset buttons on the face of the unit is a small small concave reset button. Push this to reset the entire unit. You will lose all your setting and the protection code will also be reset. The factory default is not to use the security code, but I recommend setting it to something you remember because this happens often enough on Kenwoods.

check to make sure you are still getting power to the red wire. if not check your fuses.

The procedure for clearing the code is below, but first you must understand that you must have the remote to do this procedure. Kenwood has designed these radios so that the only way to clear the code is by using the remote. I know this because I work at an authorized Kenwood service center and have done this procedure many times.

If you do not have a remote, or you can not buy or borrow one, the only other way to clear the code would be to take it to an authorized Kenwood service center and they will do it for a small fee. The shop I work at charges $25 for this, but it is up to each shop as to how much they want to charge.

Here is the procedure:

1. While “– – – –” is being displayed, press [ >>I ] key for at
least 3 seconds while pressing [AUTO] key.
This makes “– – – –” display disappear.

2. Using the remote controller, input “KCAR”.

Press remote controller [5] key 2 times (Input for “K”) and
then press [ >>I ] key.

Press remote controller [2] key 3 times (Input for “C”) and
then press [ >>I ] key.

Press remote controller [2] key once (Input for “A”) and then
press [ >>I ] key.

Press remote controller [7] key 2 times (Input for “R”) and
then press [ >>I ] key.

3. The security is released and the unit enters the STANDBY
mode.

4. If a wrong code is input, the unit goes into the Code Request
mode.

Since this is the only way and it is the correct way to clear the code, I would very much appreciate a FixYa! rating. It is the only reward we get for offering people like yourself this free information.

Oh bugger.... looks like I miss out on that kiss :( You DO need the remote to clear the code. There is no reset button on the unit to bypass this either unfortunately. What I can suggest you do is to go to a kenwood agent or car audio installer and sweet talk them into entering the reset code for you. They often have a remote or can get one of of the box to help you out. You can find a procedure on how to do it here. Sorry this is your only choice. I used to do it in the workshop on radios I was repairing, and sometimes they would have the problem after they reinstalled it, so I used to do it for people for free. You could perhaps get yourself a replacement remote to go with the unit, I suggest ordering it from the same guys that perhaps reset the code for you. It is worth having a remote. Much easier to work the unit whilst driving with the remote.. Again, sorry this isn't what you wanted to hear. Please don't down rate me for being the bearer of bad news.

you can always try the most common number sequences,(1234,1111 etc...) otherwise it has to go to an Authorized service center. You find one at www.kenwoodusa.com under support.

I wish I could have found you a better solution, but the following is Kenwood's official answer according to their FAQ:

"If you do not know the security code for your unit, you will need to take the unit to a Kenwood authorized service center to have it decoded. The code feature can only be activated when the code has been entered twice, so it isn't accidentally activated. The service center will often require you to provide a proof of purchase as this feature is designed for theft prevention and the proof of purchase will ensure you are the rightful owner of the product."

hold the menu button down untill menu pops up on the screen then go down to security hold the puase/ play button down until there are 4 under scores on the screen
