try to boot from a live distro and to see the hd status in a program like GParted. eventually you can install a boot manager from there

There can be different causes for this problem:
If having reset the motherboard BIOS configuration, then check that the primary boot device is configured properly.

I'm having trouble understanding what you mean by this - are you attempting to boot from LAN? Are you able to boot into windows at all?
What it sounds like is that your computer is either missing a boot manager, or you've assigned (in the bios) LAN boot as the priority boot device.
If that's the case, you can change the boot device priority back to internal hard disk in your BIOS (pressing F2 or F10 at startup splash screen)
If you're missing a boot manager for a windows installation, you can insert your windows installation disk and select "repair an existing installation" to repair your boot manager

Try inserting the windows recovery disc and reboot the machine. At the language screen, bottom left, click repair your computer. At the recovery options screen, click on startup repair. This should recover the boot manager file. Reboot machine when completed.

Try start up in Safe Mode press F8. Choose Safe Mode, when at the choice window, to select either Safe Mode Desktop, OR System Restore, chooses system restore and choose a time before you had the "Problem" and follow instructions. This should get you back.

you can often fix it right back up using the original Vista installation disk. Which comes with a pretty extensive System Recovery Tool that's got lots of options. Set your computer to boot from DVD (using the Boot setting in the BIOS), insert the disc and restart. Vista will prompt you for language and keyboard layout options, then ask if you want to reinstall Vista or repair your installation. You want Repair. From there Vista's System Recovery Tool will take over. this is the only way to get back from the dreaded boot manager missing error.
